Hanna Hilbrandt is a professor of geography at the University of Zürich. She will present her book published in May 2021 in the IJURR Studies in Urban and Social Change series: Housing in the Margins. Negotiating Urban Formalities in Berlin's Allotment Gardens. Based on ethnographic research, Hanna Hilbrandt focuses on the residents of allotment gardens (a law prohibits housing there) on the outskirts of Berlin, but also on the local bureaucracy. Drawing on postcolonial theories, the anthropology of the state, and critical legal geography, her book draws attention to the power of negotiation in the governance of urban space. This session will be held in English.
