Fusion reactions hold enormous potential for sustainable energy production friendly to the environment using resources that are more globally distributed, but a demonstration of scientific, technical, and economic viability must be made in order to realize this potential. The ITER tokamak, now under construction in France, represents an essential step toward a practical technical demonstration of fusion energy. This talk will give a brief introduction to the physics of tokamaks, in order to place in context a description of the present status of the ITER Project. Following that, an overview will be presented of the physics to be explored in ITER experiments and the remaining challenges for realizing the potential of fusion energy.
