We start these lectures by introducing a remarkable convolution inequality for semisimple groups discovered by Kunze and Stein. This inequality allows to prove a quantitative ergodic theorem for actions of semisimple groups, and in the second part of the lectures we discuss some number-theoretic applications of this ergodic theorem. This includes counting lattice points, Diophantine approximation, and sieving for almost-primes/square-free points on varieties.
