Groups acting on the circle with invariant laminations are
called laminar groups. The theory of laminar groups were initiated by
Danny Calegari who was motivated by the work of Bill Thurston on Universal
circles for taut foliations. In this talk, we introduce the notion of
laminar groups and show that such groups arise very naturally in various
contexts in geometric topology.
