We present what seems to be a new application of the "Ergodic Method" of Linnik. We apply it to the problem of representing "large" integral definite binary
quadratic forms by a given quaternary form. While the method does not solve the problem completely it seems essentially as good as what the theory of
automorphic forms and Generalized Riemann Hypothesis seem capable to offer at the moment.
This is joint work with M. Einsiedler, E. Lindenstrauss and A. Venkatesh.
