'In this talk I will present a class of Fuchsian groups that share many
properties with arithmetic Fuchsian groups by virtue of so-called modular
embeddings into arithmetic groups of higher rank. The main examples are
triangle groups and Veech groups, which admit very geometric descriptions.
Furthermore I will present a geometric criterion for a regular map from an
algebraic curve to a Shimura variety to be covered by such a modular
embedding, and explain its consequences to Galois actions.'
