The Swiss Leading Houses (University of Basel and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute) and the South African Leading House (NRF National Research Foundation) are interested in identifying and supporting sustainable social innovations aiming to improve health in human settlements across South Africa.

The following social innovations in housing are targeted:
  • Innovations in renewable, clean and affordable energy,
  • Affordable building materials with low environmental impact,
  • Innovations in waste disposal, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH),
  • Innovations in architecture/planning to reduce unintentional injuries and improve health & safety in low-income housing environment
 
On the Swiss side, this challenge is open for researchers i.e. Master and PhD students, Postdocs and researchers of Swiss Universities, Universities of Applied Science and research institutes or centres of technological excellence with research track record.
 
Five shortlisted Swiss projects will take part in the South African Innovation Summit Camp – One week full of activities around innovation in Cape Town (3 - 9 Sept 2017).  
 
The South African Innovation Summit Camp aims to expose Swiss researchers with applicable projects to market opportunities in South Africa.
This goal will be achieved by participation at the renowned South African Innovation Summit (www.innovationsummit.co.za/) in addition to a number of activities related to innovation such as visits to key institutions; workshop on doing business in South Africa; networking event at the Swiss Embassy in South Africa; participation at a specially hosted World Café; a matchmaking, showcasing and networking event; showcasing of innovations in the planned Swiss South Africa World Environmental & Water Resources Congress in 2018 and participation in the Swiss-South African Business Development Programme.

Application deadline is 31 July 2017.
