The importance of hospitals as point sources for pharmaceuticals and disinfectants is evaluated and possible measures are proposed to minimize the pharmaceutical input. A pilot-scale membrane bioreactor with advanced treatment by powdered activated carbon (PAC) ozone or photo catalysis (UV/TiO2) was operated at a Swiss cantonal hospital over one year. Employing robust sampling strategy and quantifying over fifty highly consumed pharmaceuticals by online SPE-LC-MS/MS provides robust and reliable results. High elimination rates were achieved in the treatments with PAC and ozone. Results are used to support legal decision if decentralized hospital wastewater treatment is an option for Switzerland.
