Trap states of TiO2 nanoparticles exert tremendous influence over their performance in catalysis and in photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices.  This seminar will describe how the visible photoluminescence of nanocrystalline TiO2, resulting from the recombination of trapped electrons and holes with mobile carriers, can reveal the spatial and energetic distribution of intra-band gap states. Spectroelectrochemical and single nanoparticle photoluminescence of conventional anatase nanoparticles as well as that of nanotubes and nanosheets will be described.
