Photon management in silicon based thin-film single or tandem solar cells constitutes a pivotal ingredient to enhance their efficiency. In this contribution we discuss our current work in this field and outline how modern concepts from the field of micro- and nanooptics may be beneficially exploited for this purpose. We concentrate on plasmonic nanostructures, photonics crystals, and randomly textured surfaces. In our theoretical work we rely on rigorous electromagnetic simulations that allow for unprecedented insights into how light propagates in such solar cells. From such simulations the peculiarities of the different physical phenomena can be elucidated and strategies can be applied that allow to optimize the optical performance of the solar cell
