Abstract:
Optical tomography is an imaging technique that aims at reconstructing the three-dimensional distribution of the refractive index of a sample. This can be used, for example, in biology to study the structure of cells in three dimensions and how cell get organized in space. In order to reconstruct the refractive index, the object is illuminated with plane waves at different incidence angles. For each incident wave, the scattered field is measured. By using a simple linear inversion method, it is possible to retrieve the refractive index from these measurements. However, this conventional method (based on the Rytov approximation) does not account for multiple scattering and is thus limited to weakly scattering object, i.e. object displaying weak index contrast.
In this talk, we will present a recent method called Learning tomography (LT) that includes multiple scattering and thus allows us to expand the limits of optical tomography. We will explain the working principle of LT and show its advantages over conventional linear techniques.
