QuantERA II ERA-NET Cofund in Quantum Technologies is a consortium of national and regional Research Funding Organisations (RFOs) in Europe supporting research in Quantum Technologies (QT). QuantERA II is supported by the European Union’s Future and Emerging Technologies programme (FET).
The QuantERA Call 2021 was launched on 12 March 2021. 35 funding agencies from 28 countries participate with a total budget of approximately 40 million €. For Switzerland, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is the Funding Agency.
The submitted proposals are expected to be aligned with one of the two QuantERA cofunded call 2021 topics:

The submitted proposals are expected to be aligned with one of the two QuantERA cofunded call 2021 topics:
- Quantum Phenomena and Resources (QPR), where the goal is to lay the foundations for the QT of the future
- Applied Quantum Science (AQS), where the goal is to take known quantum effects and established concepts from quantum science, translate them into technological applications and develop new products.
Funded projects in both topics are expected to address one or more of the following areas:
- Quantum communication
- Quantum simulation
- Quantum computation
- Quantum information sciences
- Quantum metrology sensing and imaging
Who can apply:
- International consortia must have a minimum of 3 eligible partners requesting funding in at least 3 different participating countries. Consortia are encouraged to include partners from the widening countries participating in the call: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. The standard consortium size is 3-6 partners.
- Swiss-based applicants: all Swiss applicants must be eligible for SNSF Project Funding in division II (see EPFL Instructions for SNSF Project Funding). Please contact [email protected] to verify your eligibility for the call.

For Swiss-based applicants and co-applicants:
- In case of several overlapping SNSF projects, all projects must be thematically different.
- Swiss applicants may participate in at most one QuantERA proposal.
- Researchers based in Switzerland who are beneficiaries of a project funded through the Quantum Flagship are not eligible for this QuantERA call.
- The SNSF exclusively funds research conducted for purposes that are not directly commercial.
Funding:
- The SNSF has allocated CHF 1M for 3-5 projects for this call. For EPFL applicants: use the Budget Calculator available in the EPFL Toolkit for SNSF Project Funding.
- At most 60% of the total requested funding may be requested by partners from one country.
Project duration:
- 24 or 36 months
Timeline of the call:
- Deadline for pre-proposal submission: 13 May 2021 at 17:00 CET
- Notification of accepted pre-proposals: July 2021
- Deadline for full proposal submission: 15 September 2021 at 17:00 CET
- Notification of accepted proposals : December 2021
- Start date for funded projects : Early 2022
Submission procedures:
- Swiss-based applicants must submit proposals via mySNF for the same deadlines as the consortium applications.
- Partners of an international project consortium located in a country of the QuantERA transnational consortium should be declared as consortium partner and apply for their funding at their respective research funding organisation.
- Prior contact with SNSF is highly recommended if PI has never been supported by reference funding scheme.
