The development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) has offered numerous advantages, but has also presented new challenges. One of the most significant challenges is the problem of underwater navigation or, in other words, how to determine the vehicle's position within the environment so it can take the correct actions to successfully accomplish the mission. This talk first briefly reviews advantages in underwater localization techniques. Next, examines the problem of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), a stochastic navigation methodology which is a rapidly growing research topic, and present real life results. Finally, future challenges in underwater vehicle navigation will be discussed. Advances in vehicle navigation will enable new missions for submersibles which will further increase their value to the oceanographic community.
