Jim McElwaine est un mathématicien avec un intérêt considérable pour les écoulements géophysiques. Il travaille actuellement à Cambrdige (DAMTP). Il fait un séjour de plusieurs mois au SLF de Davos pour travailler sur une nouvelle génération de radar pour les mesures au sein des avalanches de la vallée de la Sionne. Résumé
Segregation occurs in many geophysical flows with plastic behaviour including avalanches and rock-slides, but there is no generally accepted theory and almost no quantitative comparisons. We develop a general theory of segregation based on multi-component diffusion, analyse its consequences and compare the predictions with discrete element method simulations. The effects of the segregation on the frictional rheology are analysed. We explain how segregation can be included in shallow water models of geophysical flows and how this can help to explain long runout rockfalls and landslides.
