The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) has commissioned ETHZ as Leading House for bilateral research collaboration with the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
 
ETHZ and JSPS run the Japanese – Swiss Young Researcher’s Exchange Programme to:

  • foster and facilitate the direct exchange between Japanese and Swiss research groups and
  • enable the mobility of young researchers, allowing them to learn a new technique or use infrastructure directly relevant to their current research project.
 
The programme supports 3-6 months research stays in any disciplines
  • in Japan for Swiss-based young researchers and (apply via ETHZ).
  • in Switzerland for young researchers from Japan (apply via JSPS).
 
Who can apply
  • Swiss-based applicants: PhD students, young postdocs and in exceptional cases Master students employed at Swiss universities, universities of applied sciences, universities of teacher education and research institutes. Who can NOT apply: Japanese nationals and former grantees under the JSPS’s Postdoctoral Fellowships for Foreign Researchers.
  • Host researchers in Japan: employed full-time (excluding jokyo, assistant professor and joshu, research assistant) at an eligible institution.
  • Applicants based in Japan, who are interested in a research stay in Switzerland, must apply via JSPS.
 
Funding:
  • For Swiss-based applicants: monthly allowance of JPY 220’000, international air ticket and overseas travel insurance.
  • For applicants based in Japan: monthly allowance of CHF 2’500 and international air ticket.
 
Duration: 3-6 months
 
Deadline: 30 June 2020 (initially 17 June)
Decision: September 2020
Earliest start: mid-December 2020
Latest start: 31 March 2021
 
Application: Swiss-based applicants must fill out and submit the application form, together with a supporting letter from the Swiss supervisor and an acceptance letter from the Japanese host researcher as a single PDF document to Elise Nardin by email: [email protected].
