Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces parametrize stable algebraic curves. Their analogues in hyperbolic geometry parametrize nodal hyperbolic surfaces. I will discuss the homotopy of these spaces, and also of their generalization where the surface has a geodesic boundary. In particular, we recover a generalization of the Moore-Seiberg theorem on conformal blocks.
