EPFL courses commonly include projects and practical labs. These are central to how student learn to work in interdisciplinary teams to deliver creative and practical solutions to open-ended and complex problems. Developing these skills is a key challenge, and is being addressed through initiatives such as the projects and competitions which make up the Discovery Learning Programme, the development of physical spaces in the Discovery Learning Laboratories, early exposure to interdisciplinarity in the Global Issues course, as well as a host of projects and practical labs in individual courses. How do these initiatives fit together? And what methods work best in helping students develop these skills?
