Abstract “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it”. Air pollution is an enormous problem worldwide, claiming more than 7 million lives per year. In the quest to improve air quality, one of the hardest problems can be working out where exactly the pollution is coming from. Smart city initiatives have long been pushing for a vast network of connected sensors to monitor air pollution, but many of these projects are slow to pick up, and often end up abandoned, due to misalignment of each parties’ interests and goals. Origins Technology designs air quality monitors aimed directly at consumers, and in the process has accelerated the distribution of such sensors. There are currently over 10,000 monitors distributed in the city of Beijing alone, providing tens of thousands of times more data than any official/governmental monitoring stations. Liam will talk about the techniques used to collect this data, the engineering, scientific and political challenges faced, and the solutions to air pollution that are being created by this data.
