As in many parts of mathematics, developing a good classification theory of the main objects of the field is a principal goal of algebraic geometry. In the case of algebraic geometry these objects are called algebraic varieties. I will start with an explanation on the notion of algebraic varieties. I will continue by presenting a rough outline of the classification theory, including a selected list of my contributions. Finally, I will discuss some ideas leading to the proofs of the latter.
