In this talk I will first introduce the notion of the "ontological level", motivating the need of ontologically non-neutral representation formalisms; I will then present some basic distinctions of formal ontological analysis in the light of of their impact on the foundations of conceptual modeling and knowledge representation. Such distinctions are at the basis of the OntoClean methodology and the DOLCE foundational ontology, which are being used in several projects around the world. Concrete conceptual modelling examples will be made, mainly taken from enterprise modeling and e-government applications.
