ABSTRACT Hydrogen strongly affects the properties of electronic materials, and careful control of hydrogen during growth, processing, and device operation is needed to tailor the electrical behavior. First-principles calculations have allowed us to investigate the many facets of hydrogen's interactions with materials. Systematic studies for a wide range of hosts have revealed general rules governing the behavior of hydrogen, but also produced intriguing surprises. In amorphous silicon, hydrogen is known to passivate defects, but also to be involved in defect generation. I will address a number of topics that are relevant for hydrogen-related defect energetics and dynamics in silicon and amorphous silicon.
