In this talk I will describe what I mean by the theory of quantum gravity, motivate the search for this theory, and outline the progress made in this search.
In particular I will explain that the so-called AdS/CFT correspondence
of String theory leads to the complete (nonperturbative) construction of a set of `toy models' of quantum gravity.
I will describe these theories and outline some of the lessons learnt from their study.
