Colloque de Mathématiques. Abstract: We will describe three recent and apparently unconnected results: on the combinatorics of polyhedra inscribed in a quadric, on a canonical extension to the disk of homeomorphisms of the circle, and on the topology of moduli spaces of surface group representations. What those results have in common is that their proofs are all based on 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometry, the Lorentzian cousin of hyperbolic geometry. We will briefly describe the historical origin and a few striking properties of this geometry.
