We describe a few classes of self-adjoint and unitary operators which exhibit a transition in the distribution of their eigenvalues. More precisely, we consider operators with various spectral measures and investigate the change in their microscopic eigenvalue distribution. As the spectral measures approach an absolutely continuous measure, the repulsion between the eigenvalues increases and the eigenvalue distribution converges to the ``clock" (or ``picket fence") distribution.
