The presentation will briefly review the pathology of arthritis and the molecular basis of cartilage destruction in arthritis. The rationale for biomarker development will be discussed. Skeletal biomarkers developed by the speaker and his colleagues and the reasons for their development will be reviewed. Examples will be given of biomarker use in the fields of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. This will include diagnosis, assessment of rates of disease progression and determination of early responses to therapy. Biomarker use in preclinical models of joint disease will also be discussed as well as unpublished data on inflammatory biomarkers in osteoarthritis.
