Established in Hanover in 1961, the Volkswagen Stiftung is the largest private research funder in Germany. It supports path-breaking research and higher education in the humanities, social sciences, science and technology and it assists academic institutions in improving the structural conditions for their work. In particular, the Foundation perceives its mission as supporting aspiring young researchers and promoting interdisciplinary and international collaboration.
The funding instrument “Life? – A Fresh Scientific Approach to the Basic Principles of Life” aims to support unique and excellent projects at the interface between the natural and life sciences that contribute to comprehending the fundamental principles of life. Amongst others, the Foundation will consider approaches from Synthetic, Systems or Cell Biology, Xenobiology as well as Biophysics, Prebiotic Chemistry or similar research areas. The Foundation awards up to 10 project per call.
Restriction: projects dealing with basic biomedical research or treatment of diseases as well as the establishment of biomedical methods are not eligible.
Who can apply:
- Team of applicants (up to 5) holding a PhD at any stage of their career.
- The principal investigator must be based in Germany.
- International partners (incl. Swiss-based researchers) are eligible for funding.
Funding & Duration: up to EUR 1.5 million for up to 5 years for direct project costs. Does not cover overheads.
