The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill is changing the way that we think about oil spills. It is not only the second largest marine oil spill on record, it is also the first major release of oil in the deep water column. In this seminar I will discuss what has been learned about the fate and behavior of petroleum hydrocarbons resulting from a deep water oil release. Compared to conventional oil spills which occur at or near the marine surface, deep water oil releases have new implications for chemical exposures of marine life. New measurement and modeling approaches will be required to ascertain the resulting environmental impacts. The lessons we learn from the Deepwater Horizon incident are prescient; deep offshore oil drilling is expected to increase, and go into deeper waters, during the coming decades.
