The discovery of thousands of extrasolar planets and the inferred astronomical number of Earth-like planets in the Galaxy have recently fueled an intense activity in Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). The “Breakthrough Listen” initiative, the largest and most comprehensive search ever, and other ongoing and upcoming SETI research programs in the radio and optical spectrum offer the unprecedented opportunity of a systematic investigation in the vast domain of the SETI search space. I will give an overview of SETI and discuss its “physics” from the viewpoint of a condensed matter physicist.
