I'll describe some of the moduli spaces appearing in the
nonabelian Hodge theory of a (not necessarily compact) smooth algebraic curve, the way in which some of them are related to quiver varieties (both the traditional additive/Nakajima flavour and the new coloured/multiplicative flavour), and some of the generalisations of the Deligne-Simpson problem that arise in this context.
