Wind power looks set to supply more electricity in Switzerland after the 2011 moratorium on nuclear power. But how much electricity can be generated from the wind, and how does the wind climate in Switzerland compare to other areas? In this talk, I will present an introduction to measuring wind resources and estimating turbine power output. Using examples from tall towers in Switzerland and Colorado, I will show how wind characteristics can vary, and ask - does complex terrain mean complex flow? Finally, a method to better predict turbine performance in complex flows will be presented.
