Classically the brain is considered to have a simple relationship with glucocorticoids either maintaining normal function in the basal state or responding in short, medium and long time domains to increased levels of hormone during acute or chronic stress. It is now becoming apparent that thee is a much more dynamic interaction taking place even during basal states, with free glucocorticoid levels in the brain showing massive ultradian variation at about hourly intervals.I shall discuss the origin of these rhythms and their importance for for normal-and abnormal- transcriptional, cognitive and emotional responses both in rodents and in man.
