After decades of rapid progress in nanomaterials and sensing performance, the field now stands at a pivotal moment: the challenge is no longer whether we can detect with extraordinary sensitivity, but whether we can do so in ways that are sustainable, scalable, and globally accessible.
\r\nThis talk envisions a future in which point-of-care biosensing becomes an integral part of everyday life through the coupling of advanced nanomaterials with sustainable platforms. Paper-based substrates and environmentally friendly fabrication methods, such as inkjet printing and stamping, enable a new paradigm of decentralized manufacturing, one that supports rapid deployment during global health emergencies, continuous environmental monitoring, and personalized, wearable healthcare.
\r\nBy integrating biorecognition elements, including antibodies and nucleic-acid–based receptors such as DNA probes and aptamers with functional nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and two-dimensional materials, these biosensors achieve high sensitivity and specificity while remaining robust outside traditional laboratory settings. REASSURED-guided design, focusing on real-time connectivity, ease of use, affordability, sensitivity, specificity, rapid and user-friendly results, minimal equipment, and deliverability, ensures devices are intuitive, cost-effective, and provide actionable information in real time, often via visual or smartphone-based readouts.
\r\nSpanning applications from infectious disease surveillance and cancer diagnostics to neurodegenerative disease monitoring and water quality assessment, this work highlights a transformative shift: from isolated diagnostic tools to ubiquitous sensing ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable nanobiosensors offer a pathway toward more resilient healthcare systems, empowered communities, and a future where access to critical information is no longer constrained by infrastructure or geography.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoçi obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) working with in ion selective electrodes. Rev. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "Prof. Julien Marie", "creation_date": "2026-03-06T11:49:19", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-11T09:53:47", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/65172501275", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Julien MARIE, CRCL : Cancer Research Center of Lyon ", "organizer": "Prof. Daniel Constam", "contact": "Prof. Daniel Constam", "is_internal": "True", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119997/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71411, "title": "Life Science Seminar: Hitoshi Kurumizaka", "slug": "life-science-seminar-hitoshi-kurumizaka", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/life-science-seminar-hitoshi-kurumizaka", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32843/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32843/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32843/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-20", "end_date": "2026-04-20", "start_time": "16:00:00", "end_time": "17:00:00", "description": "Title:
\r\nStructural molecular biology for the nucleosome as a regulator on genomic DNA
\r\n
\r\nAbstract:
\r\nIn eukaryotic cells, genomic DNA is highly compacted into chromatin through its association with histone proteins. The fundamental unit of chromatin, the nucleosome, consists of ~147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These nucleosomes are connected by linker DNA, forming a “beads-on-a-string” structure that enables efficient packaging of the genome.
\r\nBeyond structural compaction, nucleosomes play a central role in regulating genome function. They can restrict access to DNA and act as barriers to essential processes such as transcription, replication, and repair. At the same time, nucleosomes serve as key epigenetic platforms, where histone modifications and histone variants modulate chromatin structure and dynamics to control gene activity.
\r\nTo better understand these regulatory mechanisms, we employ biochemical and structural approaches to investigate nucleosome structure and dynamics. Our studies aim to elucidate how structural transitions of nucleosomes influence DNA accessibility and ultimately govern genomic regulation. I will present our recent structural and biochemical insights and discuss their implications for understanding nucleosome-mediated genome regulation.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nHitoshi Kurumizaka is a Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1995, he started his postdoctoral training at NIH in the USA, in the laboratory of Molecular Embryology (Alan Wolffe Lab), where he began chromatin research. In 1997, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist. He subsequently moved to Waseda University, where he served as Associate Professor and later as Professor of Molecular and Structural Biology. Since 2018, he has been Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the structural basis of chromatin and epigenetic regulation in eukaryotic genomes. In 2020, he established an in-house cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform to advance high-resolution structural studies of chromatin and genome-associated protein complexes. Professor Kurumizaka has made significant contributions to the field of chromatin biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleosomes and genome-associated protein complexes. His work has been published in leading international journals and has substantially advanced our understanding of chromatin architecture and epigenetic regulation.
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-19T22:57:43", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-01T14:33:48", "link_label": "Kurumizaka lab", "link_url": "https://www.iqb.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/lab/kurumizaka/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/64667340373", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "", "organizer": "Prof. Nicolas Thomä", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "Chromatin, Structural Biology, Cryo-EM, DNA, Transcription", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120129/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/26/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71507, "title": "Genome-wide mapping of Transcription Factors' Footprints: Probing Noncoding Variants of Human Diseases", "slug": "genome-wide-mapping-of-transcription-factors-footp", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/genome-wide-mapping-of-transcription-factors-footp", "visual_url": null, "visual_large_url": null, "visual_maxsize_url": null, "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-08", "end_date": "2026-05-08", "start_time": "15:00:00", "end_time": "16:00:00", "description": "", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-31T15:22:33", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-31T15:22:33", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Professor Xiaoliang Sunney Xie
\r\nDirector of Changping Laboratory, Beijing, China
\r\nLee Shau Kee Chair Professor, Peking University, Haidian District, Beijing, China
\r\nhttps://www.cpl.ac.cn/en/Directors_Message/index.html ", "organizer": "Pr.
