After decades of rapid progress in nanomaterials and sensing performance, the field now stands at a pivotal moment: the challenge is no longer whether we can detect with extraordinary sensitivity, but whether we can do so in ways that are sustainable, scalable, and globally accessible.
\r\nThis talk envisions a future in which point-of-care biosensing becomes an integral part of everyday life through the coupling of advanced nanomaterials with sustainable platforms. Paper-based substrates and environmentally friendly fabrication methods, such as inkjet printing and stamping, enable a new paradigm of decentralized manufacturing, one that supports rapid deployment during global health emergencies, continuous environmental monitoring, and personalized, wearable healthcare.
\r\nBy integrating biorecognition elements, including antibodies and nucleic-acid–based receptors such as DNA probes and aptamers with functional nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and two-dimensional materials, these biosensors achieve high sensitivity and specificity while remaining robust outside traditional laboratory settings. REASSURED-guided design, focusing on real-time connectivity, ease of use, affordability, sensitivity, specificity, rapid and user-friendly results, minimal equipment, and deliverability, ensures devices are intuitive, cost-effective, and provide actionable information in real time, often via visual or smartphone-based readouts.
\r\nSpanning applications from infectious disease surveillance and cancer diagnostics to neurodegenerative disease monitoring and water quality assessment, this work highlights a transformative shift: from isolated diagnostic tools to ubiquitous sensing ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable nanobiosensors offer a pathway toward more resilient healthcare systems, empowered communities, and a future where access to critical information is no longer constrained by infrastructure or geography.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoçi obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) working with in ion selective electrodes. "description": "Title:
\r\nStructural molecular biology for the nucleosome as a regulator on genomic DNA
\r\n
\r\nAbstract:
\r\nIn eukaryotic cells, genomic DNA is highly compacted into chromatin through its association with histone proteins. The fundamental unit of chromatin, the nucleosome, consists of ~147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These nucleosomes are connected by linker DNA, forming a “beads-on-a-string” structure that enables efficient packaging of the genome.
\r\nBeyond structural compaction, nucleosomes play a central role in regulating genome function. They can restrict access to DNA and act as barriers to essential processes such as transcription, replication, and repair. At the same time, nucleosomes serve as key epigenetic platforms, where histone modifications and histone variants modulate chromatin structure and dynamics to control gene activity.
\r\nTo better understand these regulatory mechanisms, we employ biochemical and structural approaches to investigate nucleosome structure and dynamics. Our studies aim to elucidate how structural transitions of nucleosomes influence DNA accessibility and ultimately govern genomic regulation. I will present our recent structural and biochemical insights and discuss their implications for understanding nucleosome-mediated genome regulation.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nHitoshi Kurumizaka is a Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1995, he started his postdoctoral training at NIH in the USA, in the laboratory of Molecular Embryology (Alan Wolffe Lab), where he began chromatin research. In 1997, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist. He subsequently moved to Waseda University, where he served as Associate Professor and later as Professor of Molecular and Structural Biology. Since 2018, he has been Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the structural basis of chromatin and epigenetic regulation in eukaryotic genomes. In 2020, he established an in-house cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform to advance high-resolution structural studies of chromatin and genome-associated protein complexes. Professor Kurumizaka has made significant contributions to the field of chromatin biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleosomes and genome-associated protein complexes. His work has been published in leading international journals and has substantially advanced our understanding of chromatin architecture and epigenetic regulation.
\r\n ",

            "description": "
Abstract: Living tissues are communities comprised of many thousands of cells, and healing even a 1 mm skin wound is an exercise in massive crowd dynamics and swarm control. So, how can we heal faster or grow tissues better given this complexity? Our work applies principles from crowd mechanics, materials science, and swarm robotics to ‘herd’ cellular motion. Here, we will explore three stories related to this.
\r\n\r\n
First, we will discuss ‘outside-in’ tissue control where we have developed new strategies to ‘herd’ cellular motion inspired by sheepherding. Here, we use local electrical stimuli to control cellular speed and direction, enabling remote control of injury healing and tissue growth. These approaches are fundamentally limited by the engineering mechanics of crowds, and we will discuss how to develop control strategies here.
\r\n\r\n
Next, we will examine ‘inside-out’ tissue control where we hack swarm mechanics by building synthetic materials that mimic cells and integrate into living materials to control their function. In particular, we will look at our recent work using 3D nano printed ‘L’arc de triomphe’ tunnels to regulate and improve cell-material adhesion.
\r\n\r\n
Finally, we are developing a new type of living, soft actuator based on kidney tissue and collective control of water transport. Here, we use electrical cues to regulate ion transport and subsequent osmotic flux, allowing us to electrically control the hydrostatic pressure in living tissues and hydrogels, and we would especially appreciate feedback and advice here.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Biography: Prof. Cohen is a joint Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Bioengineering Institute at Princeton University where he also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Bioengineering Ph.D. Program. He did undergraduate training in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton University, followed by a Bioengineering Ph.D. at UC Berkeley/UCSF and a Cell Biology post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University. When he is not in the lab, he is a professional storyteller, running the LabTales Science Storytelling training workshop and performing many times each year in theaters, nightclubs, universities, and museums around the world.
",

            "description": "BIOENGINEERING SEMINAR
\r\n
\r\nAbstract:
\r\nMany powerful research tools begin as software developed within a single lab, often optimized for a specific project or computing environment. This can sometimes make these tools frustrating to install and use. Turning these tools into reliable, maintainable resources for the broader community requires testing infrastructure, clear documentation, and long-term support. The Rosetta Commons provides resources, staff, and training to help make this process straightforward and rewarding for developers and contributors, while helping reduce the frustration users often experience when installing and using new tools developed in the community.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nIn this seminar, Hope Woods (Technical Product Lead) and Rachel Clune (Documentation Writer) will highlight several Rosetta Commons resources and discuss the benefits of hosting software within the Rosetta Commons infrastructure. They will also describe their work with developers of tools such as Foundry, HBDesigner, AtomWorks, and FrustraMPNN to help ensure these projects can be maintained and supported by the community over time. Finally, they will outline pathways for researchers interested in bringing their own tools into the Rosetta Commons ecosystem.
\r\n
\r\nZoom link for attending remotely: https://epfl.zoom.us/s/65780945453",
