The interaction and networking with the community is essential to our activity: indeed, we teach to and learn from each other. The circle symbolizes the flow of information among peers as well as a paradigm where crossbreeding of ideas and methods is key to scientific advances. This message will be portrayed with examples from my scientific career and a vision of the future.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nGiovanni De Micheli is currently the Scientific Director of the EcoCloud center at EPFL. He was professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford and EPFL for 40 years. Prof. De Micheli is a Fellow of ACM, AAAS and IEEE, elected member of 4 Academies, including the US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the recipient of the 2025 IEEE Gustav Kirchhoff Award, the 2022 ESDA-IEEE Phil Kaufman Award and several other awards.
\r\n ", "image_description": "Honorary Lecture - Prof. Giovanni De Micheli", "creation_date": "2025-07-11T16:13:38", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-04T15:47:11", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CO 2", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CO%202", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Sabine Süsstrunk, Dean of IC School and Prof. Adrian Ionescu, Dean of STI School, Prof. Giovanni De Micheli, Prof. Edouard Bugnion, Vice President for Innovation and Impact", "organizer": "IC School ", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "honorary lecture, leçon d'honneur, Giovanni De Micheli, computer science, IC School, STI School, AI", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/117133/", "category": { "id": 8, "code": "LI", "fr_label": "Leçons inaugurales - Leçons d'honneur", "en_label": "Inaugural lectures - Honorary Lecture", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/3/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71066, "title": "School Lecture Series: Joud Beaudoin, Lorraine Beaudoin / EPFL Architecture", "slug": "school-lecture-series-joud-beaudoin-lorraine-beaud", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/school-lecture-series-joud-beaudoin-lorraine-beaud", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32444/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32444/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32444/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-12", "end_date": "2026-05-12", "start_time": "19:00:00", "end_time": "20:30:00", "description": "JOUD BEAUDOIN, LORRAINE BEAUDOIN
\r\nMaison de quartier des Plaines du loup
\r\n
\r\nLocated in the Parc du loup, on the edge of a newly built neighborhood, the community center is designed according to the principle of “houses within a house”: the various programmatic units are distributed across four distinct volumes, fragmenting the building and giving it a human scale and porosity to its environment. Between them lies a fluid interstitial space that lends itself to encounters and exchanges, thanks to a double-height space that connects the two levels. This spatial constellation offers a wide variety of possible uses, while the construction uses organic and geo-sourced materials, allowing the new building to become part of its surroundings and creating interiors with unique atmospheres.
\r\n
\r\nLorraine Beaudoin has been running the Joud Beaudoin Architects office in Lausanne with Christophe Joud since 2014. Study partners since the beginning of their architectural training at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Lyon (Ensal) and then at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) for their master's degree and joint diploma in 2009, they contributed between 2010 and 2020 to various research projects and theoretical writings on collective housing at the Laboratory of Theory and History of Architecture (LTH2, EPFL), under the direction of Bruno Marchand. Their projects and achievements are mainly the result of public competitions.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture is part of the School Lecture Series
\r\n
\r\nCOMMUNITY VOL.2
\r\nSeven exemplary projects and case studies
\r\n
\r\nCommunity is an ambivalent concept. It involves both gathering through shared customs and exclusion. Some claim that inclusive communities do not exist. Recent history shows people more often unite through exclusion than inclusion. However, communities are not sealed. Philosopher Roberto Esposito explains that community ‘is not a property or territory to defend but a void, a debt, and a gift to others’, reminding us of our otherness.
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture series explores the topic of community through architecture. How does architecture explore, define, or enable communities? Can architects collaborate directly with communities, bypassing institutional entities? How can design convey a collective experience? Seven emerging and established architectural figures respond to these questions through their work, which spans film, exhibitions, and communitarian buildings.
\r\n
\r\nSave the dates and join us on Tuesday evenings!
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-06T16:53:55", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-09T11:15:04", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Foyer SG", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%20294.22", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Joud Beaudoin, Lorraine Beaudoin", "organizer": "EPFL Architecture", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "school lecture series", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119613/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 70314, "title": "10th Rencontres de l'EDAR: Autonomy and Abstraction", "slug": "10th-rencontres-de-l-edar-autonomy-and-abstraction", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/10th-rencontres-de-l-edar-autonomy-and-abstraction", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32136/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32136/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32136/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-12", "end_date": "2026-05-13", "start_time": "08:30:00", "end_time": "20:00:00", "description": "Les Rencontres de l'EDAR is the annual meeting of the Doctoral program in Architecture and Sciences of the City, aimed at gathering the entire EDAR community. Its 10th edition, organized in collaboration with the Institute of Architecture, will be entitled Autonomy and Abstraction and will deal two fundamental dimensions of scholarly inquiry. The two days event, open to the public, will be structured in the form of thematic sessions alternating with keynotes and round tables.
\r\n
\r\nAbstraction will be approached in its classical philosophical meaning, consistent with the view that understanding requires the mind to grasp the universal apart from the particulars in which it is embodied. In this sense, abstraction is the mental operation through which the essential structure of a subject is drawn out from its contingent features, allowing researchers to discern the general principles that render their object intelligible. This conceptual withdrawal does not negate the concrete but clarifies what endures beyond the variability of specific instances.
\r\n
\r\nAutonomy will be presented as a distinct yet complementary notion: the capacity of a discipline to reflect upon itself through its own internal laws and modes of reasoning. It entails a temporary suspension of external frameworks so that the discipline may be understood from within, according to the coherence of its concepts and the logic that shapes its questions. While abstraction deals with the apprehension of universal principles, autonomy has to do with the conditions under which these principles operate within a disciplinary horizon.
\r\n
\r\nOnce defined as separate notions, abstraction and autonomy will be brought into constructive relation, for both require a measured intellectual distance that enables the essential to be articulated. In this context, participants will be invited to suspend, for a moment, the temporal and spatial dimensions that ordinarily situate their work, in order to concentrate on the internal logics that define it. The possibility of abstraction and autonomy will be explored not as a doctrine but as an open interpretative field through which doctoral researchers may examine their subjects at the level of foundational assumptions and operative laws.
\r\n
\r\nThese Rencontres will emphasise that both abstraction and autonomy admit multiple interpretations, each opening further avenues for reflection. This presentation will highlight the power of combining total synthesis and late-stage transformations to generate complex, modified proteins for deciphering the molecular roles of post-translational modifications (PTMs) in TFs regulation. Specific examples will focus on the synthesis of site-specifically phosphorylated and acetylated TFs, such as the Myc/Max system.2, 3 Remarkably, these studies revealed that phosphorylation and acetylation patterns modulate Max–DNA interactions by altering DNA binding affinity and sequence specificity. Importantly, such mechanistic insights led to the development of novel bioactive miniproteins derived from Max (μMax), capable of inhibiting oncogene expression and cancer cell proliferation through antagonistic binding to target genes in cancer cells, paving the way for the development of new therapeutic proteins targeting oncogene expression.4-6
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n1. It presents around a hundred paintings on wood, didactic works produced between 1997 and 2007 in the teaching units of the painter Arduino Cantàfora. They suggest a possible way of making, between thought and actio, where drawing and painting structure a concept and become an essential language for expressing the founding idea of a project. Despite the transition to digital technology, the exhibition conveys the conviction that the artisanal culture of drawing and painting continues to play a fundamental and indispensable role in training architects.
\r\n
\r\nAn exhibition produced in collaboration with the LAPIS laboratoryat the EPFL’s Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nicola Braghieri, Filippo Fanciotti and Emy Amstein
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-18T11:19:13", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-18T11:19:54", "link_label": "Une éducation au réel", "link_url": "https://www.epfl.ch/campus/art-culture/museum-exhibitions/archizoom/fr/une-education-au-reel-latelier-cantafora-2/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SG 1212", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201212", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Beatrice Lampariello, Nicola Braghieri, Filippo Fanciotti", "organizer": "Archizoom, LAPIS", "contact": "Solène Hoffmann", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "Architecture, ville, représentation, dessin, peinture, livre", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119778/", "category": { "id": 9, "code": "MANIF", "fr_label": "Événements festifs et culturels", "en_label": "Cultural events", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/45/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 70935, "title": "Genome-wide in vitro reconstitution to study nucleosome positioning and chromatin architecture", "slug": "genome-wide-in-vitro-reconstitution-to-study-nucle", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/genome-wide-in-vitro-reconstitution-to-study-nucle", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32323/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32323/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32323/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-20", "end_date": "2026-05-20", "start_time": "17:00:00", "end_time": "18:30:00", "description": "
Access to genetic information within the cell nucleus is regulated by the distribution of nucleosomes, which are the basic unit of chromatin. Local access to specific genomic regions is facilitated by repositioning nucleosomes to enable transcription and other nuclear processes. Nucleosome positioning is primarily regulated by ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling enzymes (CRs) that belong to the Snf2-type helicase family. These enzymes disrupt histone-DNA contacts by consuming ATP. The functions of CRs can be redundant or essential, complicating their study in vivo. To address this, we employ a unique bottom-up approach, in which we reconstitute chromatin in vitro using purified proteins and a yeast genomic plasmid library. To elucidate the diverse remodeling functions of CRs, we add purified CRs in combination with various transcription factors to the in vitro reconstituted chromatin. The resulting changes in nucleosome positioning are monitored using MNase-seq. Depending on the type of CR used, we observe distinct nucleosome positioning patterns. Furthermore, we have expanded our in vitro reconstitution approach to explore the 3D genome organization of reconstituted chromatin, discovering a role for CRs in the 3D genome organization of S. cerevisiae.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-01-23T09:41:37", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-10T12:18:20", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "BCH 2218", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==BCH%202218", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Elisa Oberbeckmann (University of Goettingen)", "organizer": "Professeur Beat Fierz", "contact": "Marie Munoz", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "CBseminar", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119413/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/14/?format=api" ] } ] }
