Abstract
The study of water waves is a classical problem at the interface of mathematics and physics. In
this talk, I will consider two-dimensional travelling waves governed by the full Euler equations
and driven solely by gravity. I will present two recent results. First, using global bifurcation
theory, we construct periodic travelling waves with arbitrary vorticity. These waves may exhibit
critical layers and overhanging profiles, illustrating the rich range of phenomena permitted in the
water wave problem. Second, for irrotational solitary waves, we establish a new and sharper
upper bound for the Froude number (a non-dimensional wave speed). The talk is based on joint
work with Evgeniy Lokharu and Erik Wahlén.
