The topic of this talk is the Grassmann manifold, which consists of all p-dimensional linear subspaces of R^n. We will first review a few applications where the Grassmann manifold appears; they range from machine learning, computer vision and image processing to low-rank matrix optimization problems, dynamic low-rank decompositions and model reduction. We will explain in what sense this set is a manifold. We will then go over a few essential facts and formulae on the geometry of the Grassmann manifold in a fashion that is fit for tackling the aforementioned applications with matrix-based algorithms.
