European population is rapidly aging and ICT can play a significant role in addressing the ensuing socio-economical challenges such as home care, training and rehabilitation, and in prolonging independent participation in society for the elderly. Body area networks are a key enabling technology for ambient-assisted living, but the challenge of power consumption and lifetime of such systems is still a major concern, particularly when actuation is involved. A research effort is needed to increase user comfort in managing her/his health in autonomy and decrease needs of battery re-charge or replacement, by exploring the opportunity of power resources coming from the environment and the body of the wearer. In this talk I will analyze energy optimization and harvesting solutions in the context of body area networks, with emphasis on flexible multi-harvesters for heterogeneous sensors and actuators.
