Motivated by the Einstein constraint equation in general relativity, I will talk about a way to construct solution operators to underdetermined PDE systems, generalizing the Bogovskii operator in fluid mechanics. It has optimal regularizing properties and has the advantage of being able to control the propagation of support. This leads to some interesting applications on the flexibility of initial data for the Einstein equations. This is based on joint work with Philip Isett, Yuchen Mao, and Sung-Jin Oh.
