On the day 3 of the Capitalising on uncertainty summer school, we have the pleasure to welcome two lecturers focussing on model uncertainty:
Jonas Warmuth is a structural engineer and researcher working at the intersection of structural engineering and architecture. His work explores how digital tools can support designers in the early stages of a project, when requirements, constraints, and even the structural concept itself are still evolving. At EPFL's Structural Xploration Lab, he developed Dragonfly3D, an interactive design framework that helps engineers and architects explore structural possibilities rather than simply optimize predefined solutions. His research focuses on interactive equilibrium design, form-finding, and computational approaches that enable the exploration of large structural design spaces while incorporating real-world design constraints. Applications of this work include stock-constrained design and the integration of reclaimed structural elements into new projects. Jonas studied Structural Engineering in Erfurt and Munich and is currently working as a practicing structural engineer at Schnetzer Puskas Ingenieure in Basel.
Valentin N. Hartmann a postdoctoral researcher in the Computational Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich, and is working on multi-agent task and motion planning. He is interested in how to deal with uncertainty in planning, and how to get robots to be adaptive to changing circumstances. This includes learning-based methods and classical methods, and finding combinations to leverage the strengths of either approaches. He did his PhD in Marc Toussaint’s LIS group at TU Berlin, where he worked on task and motion planning (TAMP) using optimization techniques, in addition to sampling-based planners, with inspiration from control theory. He was associated with IntCDC, and was involved in several projects at the intersection of robotics and architecture.
The titles of their presentations are :
- Jonas Warmuth: How do you design what you cannot yet define ? Interactive Structural Exploration with Dragonfly3D
- Valentin N. Hartmann: Uncertainty and how to deal with it in multi-robot assembly planning
The lectures are public and open to anyone interested
