This talk will survey old and recent advances in three closely related problems. Coordination is the distributed control of a collective task. Synchronization is the phase coordination of a collective rhythm. Consensus is the ultimate agreement reached through local but spreading exchange of information. We show some benefits of a unifying geometric approach to the three problems by considering the generalization of the classical consensus problem to state-space that are not vector spaces but manifolds. We highlight the numerous applications of consensus on manifolds and discuss some open problems in this rich area of dynamics and control.
