Let C be a smooth projective curve of genus g over a finite field and D a divisor on C of degree >2g−2. We will explain how to get a “universal” formula for the number of stable Hitchin bundles (twisted by D) on C of rank n, trace zero, and fixed determinant of degree prime to the rank. When we simply fix the degree of the determinant (prime to n), such a result is due to Mozgovoy-O'Gorman following the works of Mozgovoy-Schiffmann and Mellit. We will explain how one can reduce to it by a study of the relative cohomology of the Hitchin fibration.
