Recent advances in the field of high-temperature cuprate superconductivity will be presented in this talk. One subject will be competition of charge order with superconductivity in the archetypical cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7. Three X-ray scattering experiments have recently emerged on this topic [1-3]. A second topic is related to the nature of the metallic normal state of overdoped cuprates. A study showing how the Fermi liquid quasiparticles are breaking down as a function of momentum will be presented.
