When an elliptic curve is allowed to vary in a 1-parametric family, it may degenerate, and along with its smoothness lose also its group structure. Neron models were introduced in the '70's to degenerate the curve without losing the group structure. In the first part of the talk I will introduce Neron models and give their log geometric intepretation; in the second part I will show how this interpretation gives a way to degenerate group structures for n-parametric families of elliptic curves with n>1.
