I will show that smooth projective varieties with equivalent bounded derived categories have, at least under certain natural hypothesis, the same class in a suitable variant of the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This has some applications to the derived invariance of Hodge numbers. It is a joint work with Luigi Lombardi and Giuseppe Pareschi.
