Abstract: In this talk, I will share insights from the Center for Ageing, Reliability, and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems (CARL) at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, with a focus on Germany's approach to the digitalization of battery technology. By integrating physics-based models with machine learning, our research is advancing intelligent, data-driven strategies for battery production, testing, and real-world applications. This talk will offer a unique perspective on how digitalization is shaping the future of energy storage systems, with an emphasis on reliability, performance, and sustainability.
Biography: Weihan Li is a Junior Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization for Batteries at RWTH Aachen University, where he co-leads the Center for Ageing, Reliability, and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems (CARL) and is a member of the RWTH AI Center. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology summa cum laude from RWTH Aachen University in 2021, following an M.Sc. in Automotive Engineering and Transport in 2017.
Li’s research focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence and physics-based approaches to advance the digitalization of battery technology. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, holds numerous patents, and has received competitive grant funding from Horizon Europe, BMFTR, BMWE, BMV, and industry partners. Li has received numerous prestigious honors, including designation as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (2024–2025), the BMFTR BattFutur Starting Grant (€2M+), the German Thesis Award (Körber Foundation), the Reichart Prize, the vgbe Innovation Prize, the Battery Young Research Award, the Umbrella Award, and the RWTH Innovation Award.
