ECI Call for Interdisciplinary Projects in Imaging

Imaging is an interdisciplinary discipline that plays a central and ever-increasing role in science and engineering. To encourage cross-fertilization between various disciplines and closer interactions between EPFL actors in imaging, the EPFL Center for Imaging is launching its “Calls for Interdisciplinary Projects in Imaging”, a series of grants to support collaborative projects aimed at advancing imaging technology at EPFL.
Purpose of the Grants
The grants aim at supporting research collaborations that rely on an interdisciplinary approach to demonstrate innovative new concepts in imaging.
The grants are of approximatively 150kCHF each and must be shared by at least two EPFL labs for a maximum period of two years.
The grants must be used for the launching of new research activities and/or the development of tools that can impact the EPFL imaging community at large.
Eligibility Criteria for Application
Only members of EPFL research labs that are part of an ECI’s partner School (ENAC, IC, SB, STI, SV) can apply. Applicants must be employed as EPFL professors or senior scientists (MERs) for the full duration of the project[1].
The proposal must involve at least two research groups that have complementary expertise. There is no requisite for the partner applicants to be from different EPFL Schools or Institutes, although cross-school proposals and novel collaborations are strongly encouraged. Each applicant cannot submit more than one proposal per call as main applicant or as co-applicant.
The same consortium of applicants cannot submit the same idea to more than one of the following 2021 EPFL-wide calls: ECI Call for Interdisciplinary Imaging Projects, EPFL Science Seed Fund, EPFL Platform Technical Advancement Seed Fund.
[1] Adjunct professors / MERs who are not financially independent must provide a letter of commitment from their host professor or head of unit, indicating that he/she 1) guarantees the feasibility of the project for its full duration using the means of his/her unit, and 2) takes administrative responsibility for all EPFL personnel financed by the project, in particular with respect to any induced cost or additional resources needed and not covered by the grant.

Proposals will be evaluated by a scientific committee based on their scientific quality, their level of interdisciplinarity and innovation, and their relevance to the rest of the EPFL imaging community. A special attention will be given to proposals that promote community-building through events that involve the EPFL imaging community at large.
The scientific committee is composed of five EPFL faculty members who represent the various EPFL Schools and a diversity of imaging expertise. The committee will make the final decision on the projects to be funded.

- Costs for the personnel specifically hired for the project;
- Costs for the acquisition of equipment and/or material that is key to the execution of the project and may benefit other members of the EPFL imaging community after the completion of the project;
- Other costs: direct costs of infrastructure use, open research data costs, open access publication costs, costs for project-related workshop(s) organization.
