I will discuss the role of entanglement in quantum many body systems and argue that tensor networks yield a natural framework for describing strongly correlated systems. Using the language of tensor networks, it will be demonstrated that topological phase transitions can be understood in terms of the emergence of symmetries on the entanglement degrees of freedom, thereby obtaining a refined picture of Landau's characterization of phase transitions in terms of symmetry breaking.
