After light excitation ruthenium bipyridyl complexes in solution or attached to semiconductor surface may adopt varying relaxation channels. Singlet excitation may lead to intersystem crossing, conformational changes, electron injection or dissociation. Typical feature of the complexes is fast intersystem crossing that provides a competing relaxation channel to singlet reactions, injection or dissociation. Spin forbidden absorption and breaking of ligand symmetry may occur. Dissociation was found to be followed by slower processes, conformational change, solvent attachment and cooling. Several ultrafast techniques were used to explore these phenomena, in UV, vis and mid-IR regions.
