Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) | SWEET (SWiss Energy research for the Energy Transition) Call 1-2022

Event details
Date | 28.04.2022 |
Category | Call for proposal |
SWEET (SWiss Energy research for the Energy Transition) is a funding programme of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE). The purpose is to fund transdisciplinary research and innovation activities with a focus on Switzerland’s energy strategy 2050 and the country’s climate policy goals. The programme targets research and innovation in the domains of energy efficiency, renewable energy, storage, networks, and security and safety of critical energy infrastructures. SWEET spans the innovation cycle from application-oriented basic research to preparations for deployment.
The guiding theme for the 1st call 2022 is “Co-Evolution of the Swiss Energy System and Swiss Society and Its Representation in Coordinated Simulations”. The objectives of this call are to investigate the interaction between the energy system and society and to apply the findings (e.g. in simulations) and to coordinate the simulations of the energy system that are being carried out by a various groups so that the simulations can be compared in a meaningful manner.
The consortium’s work is expected to lead to the following outcomes:
SWEET targets the formation of a transdisciplinary consortium of institutions working together over 10 years. Such a consortium should comprise at least 5 applicants from different legal entities and be led by a host institution that is a Swiss institution of higher education and the legal entity applying on behalf of the consortium.
Who can apply
Research institutes, tertiary education sector, private sector, as well as public sector such as cantons and communes. Foreign institutions may participate and receive funding, provided their skills and competencies are essential and cannot be fulfilled by Swiss applicants.
Applicants from the natural sciences and engineering, the economic sciences, and the SSH must be equitably represented in the consortium and its management.
Consortia are composed of Applicants (receiving SWEET funds) and Cooperation partners (not receiving SWEET funds). Both may participate in more than one consortium. However, the same kind of contribution may not be offered to more than one consortium.
The host institution is a Swiss institution of higher education and represents the consortium to the SFOE.
Funding
The overall budget for this call is 10 MCHF for one consortium over a period of 10 years.
Applicants in a consortium are expected to contribute financially and/or in-kind according to their abilities.
Eligible costs
Internal costs for staff. Costs for equipment, services, expenses and others. Costs in connection with coordination, management and monitoring of the consortium, as well as for communication, dissemination and exploitation of results (knowledge and technology transfer).
Submission and deadline
SWEET Call 1-2022 is being organized as a two-step process:
Important: Consortia that intend to submit a pre-proposal must inform the SFOE by sending a notification of intent to submit to [email protected] no later than 28 April 2022. The notification is mandatory. Please inform the Research Office in parallel.
Use the official notification form and pre-proposal template available on the SWEET webpage. Application documents must be submitted electronically to [email protected].
Letters of Interest of Applicants or Cooperation Partners, as well as a Letter of Commitment of the Host Institution are requested by SFOE: please contact the EPFL research office at [email protected] by 3 June 2022.
An Open access and data management plan is requested: for help, please contact the EPFL library at [email protected].
For further information: please visit the SWEET webpage, and read carefully the SWEET Guidelines. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

The consortium’s work is expected to lead to the following outcomes:
- Foundation for a long-term transdisciplinary collaboration between the social sciences & humanities (SSH), the natural sciences and engineering, and the economic sciences on energy- and climate-related questions.
- Documentation of all models, assumptions, scenarios, narratives/story-lines, and results that were contributed or generated by consortium members.
