Cloud computing is a very real advance in technology which is enabling an entirely new wave of successful businesses and software applications. Over the past four years PV Lighthouse has been developing and publishing cloud software designed specifically for solar engineers. Usage has grown dramatically with over 1.4 million calculations performed for over 100,000 unique users. This talk will cover some of the learnings from this experience and highlight the advantages of cloud computing to these sorts of applications. It will also provide an update on the PV Lighthouse software capabilities including some recent additions such as the PV Factory (an educational environment for solar cell manufacturing) and the Module Ray Tracer (used for assessing optical losses in encapsulated cells). Finally, the future roadmap of PV Lighthouse will be presented in which highly optimised physics solutions are combined with massive on-demand parallel computing to bring super computers into the laptops and cubicles of the world’s solar engineers.
